Canine skin and soft tissue tumors - Clinical and cytohistological study MV&Z
Chalita, Maria Carolina Catai; Matera, Julia Maria; Alves, Maria Teresa de Seixas; Longatto Filho, Adhemar.
Over the course of 17 months, non-aspiration fine needle (21-27G) cytology was performed on 213 dogs with 300 skin and soft tissue tumors. The smears were air dried and stained by the Rosenfeld method. There were 119 males (56%) and 94 females (44%), the majority of at least 6 years of age (75%). Mongrel dogs were over-represented (n=74), followed by Boxer (n=21), Poodle (n=18), German Shepard (n=15), Cocker Spaniel (n=12), and Doberman Pinscher (n= 11). In 40% of the cases (85 dogs, 117Iesions), histological evaluation was available to compare with the cytologic results. In this group, 77 specimens were benign (22 non-neoplastic and 55 neoplastic) and 40 malignant. Tumors were represented by 19%non-neoplastic lesions, 36% epithelial tumors, 30%...

Choroid plexus carcinoma in a cow Ciência Rural
Sant'Ana,Fabiano José Ferreira de; Gabriel,Adriane Loy; Kommers,Glaucia Denise; Barros,Claudio Severo Lombardo de.
A red, firm 3.5x3.0x3.0cm mass was found within the right lateral ventricle, compressing the hippocampus and thalamus of the brain of a 4-year-old cow. The pituitary was enlarged and firm. Histologically, both the brain and pituitary masses consisted of moderately pleomorphic epithelial cells arranged as rosettes or sheets supported by a delicate fibrovascular stroma. Based on anatomical localization, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings, a diagnosis of choroid plexus carcinoma with pituitary metastasis was made.

Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation of oesophageal leiomyosarcoma in a dog Ciência Rural
Alves,Renata Cintra Ciccone; Batista,Tatiana Linardi; Laufer-Amorim,Renée; Elias,Fabiana; Calazans,Sabryna Gouveia; Fonseca-Alves,Carlos Eduardo.
Oesophageal leiomyosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of smooth muscle fibres that is infrequently reported in the literature. Because of the importance of definitive diagnosis and the low incidence of this tumour in dogs, it was reported a case of oesophageal leiomyosarcoma in a dog. A 13-year-old intact male Rottweiler presented regurgitation, hyporexia, and chronic weight loss. After an imaging examination, tumour in the thoracic oesophagus was suspected and a biopsy was sugested for definitive diagnosis. However, the owner did not permit the procedure. Six months after the clinical diagnosis, the patient was brought for evaluation of anorexia, apathy, and severe dyspnoea. Because of the patient's clinical signs and lack of response to emergency treatment,...

INTRAOCULAR TRANSMISSIBLE VENEREAL TUMOR IN A DOG Ciência Rural
Rodrigues,Geórgia Nadalini; Alessi,Antonio Carlos; Laus,José Luiz.
Canine transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) is a round cell neoplasm occurring on the external genital mucosa of male and female dogs. Transmission is by cell implantation during coitus, licking, or other interaction between an affected dog and a susceptible host. Metastasis of the tumor rarely occurs. This report describes an unusual presentation of TVT with intraocular involvement and inguinal lymph nodes metastasis. The subject was a six-year-old, intact, male, Brazilian Terrier dog with a history of abnormal masses in the right eye, penis and several subcutaneous nodules in the inguinal area. Histopathological examination of the eye specimens as well as cytologic examination of penile mass and subcutaneous nodules revealed similar findings. The...

Mast cells and angiogenesis in canine mammary tumor Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lavalle,G.E; Bertagnolli,A.C; Tavares,W.L.F; Ferreira,M.A.N.D; Cassali,G.D.
The correlation between microvessel density and mast cells density in canine mammary tumors was studied. Sixty-five samples of canine mammary tumors, being 24 benign and 41 malignant, were analyzed. The routine Toluidine Blue staining method was used to assess the mast cells. To evaluate angiogenesis, the immunohistochemical expression of CD31 was assessed. There was no significant difference in either mast cells (P=0.44) or microvessel density (P=0.77) between malignant and benign tumors. A positive correlation was observed between microvessel density and mast cells (r=0.39; P=0.011) in malignant tumors. These results suggest that mast cells may play a role in canine mammary malignant tumors development, promoting angiogenesis, similar to some tumors...

Self-reported cancer family history is a useful tool for identification of individuals at risk of hereditary cancer predisposition syndrome at primary care centers in middle-income settings: a longitudinal study Genet. Mol. Biol.
Flória-Santos,Milena; Lopes-Júnior,Luís Carlos; Alvarenga,Larissa de Melo; Ribeiro,Mayara Segundo; Ferraz,Victor Evangelista de Faria; Nascimento,Lucila Castanheira; Pereira-da-Silva,Gabriela.
Abstract Analysis of cancer family history (CFH) offers a low-cost genetic tool to identify familial cancer predisposition. In middle-income settings, the scarcity of individual records and database-linked records hinders the assessment of self-reported CFH consistency as an indicator of familial cancer predisposition. We used self-reported CFH to identify those families at risk for hereditary cancer syndromes in community-based primary care centers of a low-income Brazilian area. We also evaluated the consistency of the information collected by reassessing CFH five years later. We interviewed 390 families and constructed their pedigrees for genetic cancer risk assessment. We found 125 families affected by cancer, 35.2% with moderate to high risk of...
